Italy - Senate Revises Gaming Laws
Despite being faced by strong opposition from betting operators and gaming associations, Italy has officially adopted the new gaming law proposals. The laws were revised by the Italian Senate earlier this week, and are sure to trigger enormous licensing activity in the Country’s betting markets.
The new amendments fall under decree 149 and will see 3,000 new licenses for betting shops at a starting bid of €85,000 per outlet. Any licenses obtained will enable an operator to offer bets on sports and horseracing until June 30, 2016.
The new laws also imply that Italy may become more competitive for operators seeking to relocate there, however the lack of bilingual human resources and the volatility of the regulations will still serve to deterr any new significant interest.
This development could well be a catalyst for further industry changes within Italy, where operators based in the EU are faced with numerous barriers to offering their services to Italian citizens.
Meanwhile, existing operators within Italy are expected to react aggressively to the laws in an attempt to preserve their dominance within the sector.
