Local Energy Infrastructure Improved
Minister Austin Gatt yesterday inaugurated Enemalta’s new distribution centre. The new infrastructure will cater for reducing existing technical inefficiences.
This inauguration comes amidst voiced concerns regarding Smart City. Smart City is expected to consume 20MW of electrical energy.
Some members of the public have expressed a lack of confidence in the local energy infrastructure, the main talk points have revolved around the possibility of more frequent power cuts due to the high energy demand expected from Smart City, as well as the ecological issues the project presents.
The development of this new energy distribution centre was launched in 2003, the centre is now operational and equipped with modern system checks. Dr Gatt also stated that a new turbine will be installed in Delimara in order to compensate for the shutdown in Marsa by 2015. Dr Gatt also announced that the local energy infrastructure will be able to power Smart City without any difficulty.
The distribution centre cost an approximate €15.4 million and forms part of a €65 million reform plan for Enemalta.
